Ectaco jetBook Color Gets Custom Fitted for the Department of Defense April 03, 2012

Ectaco, Inc., the world leader in portable translation technology, has tailored its education oriented jetBook Color with exceptional security features for the Department of Defense. These features are designed to eliminate access to the device by anyone other than the specified user, and promote a complete standalone unit safe for travel and use within the DoD.

The jetBook Color is the only touchscreen Color E Ink eBook Reader in the world. It’s also the only one that promotes the idea of “healthy reading” by using ambient light to produce color. The most important part of the DoD project was to customize the security features making the unit completely impenetrable by third party access and applications. By eliminating the WiFi option, microphone, and a few other features, the device becomes solely accessible by the user only. An additional partition was added as a security measure that disallows the transfer of any documents on the jetBook Color to any other device - meaning that anything on the unit cannot be taken off the unit unless deleted. This ensures that confidential documents stay in their rightful place. The features added were based on special request as the iPad and other Android devices were not capable of providing such safety measures.

The Department of Defense has a reputation of being at the forefront of safety and security. By using the jetBook Color in their divisions they'll continue the trend. Instead of lugging important paper documents, personnel can be equipped with units weighing just 1 pound and capable of storing every document needed – securely. Users will also have the ability of using the jetBook Color as a notebook where they can freely write on the screen using a supplied stylus that fits into the device. This methodology eliminates the loss of vital notes and paperwork.

"With the products we developed specifically for the Department of Defense in the past, it was inevitable to introduce our newest jetBook Color", states David Lubinitsky, CEO, Ectaco, Inc. "The added security features make this the only device safe and protected enough to be used by the DoD."

Ectaco jetBook and jetBook Lite
When I became interested in buying an ebook reader, the first thing I discovered was that there are a mountain of choices out there, and which one was best for me was not immediately clear. Ectaco jetBook, Kindle, SONY and most recently the Apple iPad, among others, all offer excellent digital readers with varying feature sets, costing from around $150 to over $1000. With that kind of price range, there just had to be some significant differences between them. I finally settled on the jetBook, and here’s why; what I wanted to do, primarily, was read books. And, if possible, listen to my digital music library while doing so.

CES 2010: 14 second with jetBook
Okay, I tried to spend some time with each of the hot eReaders at CES, but there were plenty of others on display, more than I could possibly spend time with. So I decided to pick one other to check out and the one that caught my eye was the jetBook. Unfortunately, I had burnt up too much camera battery before getting to them, so I only got 14 seconds for a back and front view and pricing. I feel bad about that, but I was impressed by their angle in the eReader game, aiming for affordability and simple operation. While everyone else is duking it out in the high end of the market with fancier hardware, stuffing in as many features as they can, these guys are trying to make the eReader for everyone else.

CES 2010: E-Readers Galore
As suspected, electronic book readers are a hot item at the show, with plenty of models within the dedicated ebook section, as well as more spread throughout the show floor. The jetBook lite is a standard-sized ebook reader that's powered by two AA batteries. Which adds a little bulk on the back, but still affords easy gripping. It comes wit 100 MB of memory built-in, but can accept memory cards up to 32 GB in capacity. It's coolest feature is a subtle one: a small slider button on the left side that you simply push down on with your thumb to flip to the next page. Another cool function: it has a built-in accelerometer so that you can view text in widescreen mode as well if preferred.

ECTACO Jetbook Review
In March of this year (2008) ECTACO released a new electronic book reading device, the Jetbook. Previously a company that produced electronic translation devices, ECTACO put that experience to good use to design and build their Jetbook. ECTACO took a different approach to the recent entries in the market which use the relatively new eInk screens. The Jetbook uses a reflexive LCD screen. The LCD screen, is similar to an LCD monitor or television but does not contain an internal back light. Instead it relies on ambient light reflected from the screen for its display. The screen looks similar to those you might see on a calculator or watch.
